The combo of maple syrup and brown sugar gives this oatmeal a sweet, caramelized flavor. Oats provide a good amount of vitamins, minerals, fiber and even antioxidants. They are basically a “super grain.” Comes together in just 10 minutes! Vegan, gluten-free and easily customizable.
Ingredients Needed
old fashioned rolled oats – old fashioned rolled oats are best for this recipe. Make sure you grab gluten-free oats if needed. I use Bob’s Red Mill gluten-free rolled oats. water or milk – I like using water in my oatmeal and think it’s plenty creamy, but if you prefer you can always use your favorite non-dairy milk! My go-to is unsweetened almond milk. Try making your own almond milk. ground cinnamon – the perfect warming spice for this recipe! vanilla extract – a great flavor enhancer. maple syrup – I love adding maple syrup to my oats. It blends perfectly with all the ingredients and the sweet flavor is hard to match with anything else. brown sugar – you can’t have maple brown sugar oatmeal without brown sugar! sea salt – just a pinch of salt will bring all the flavors together.
How to Make
Add oats, water or milk, salt, cinnamon and vanilla to a saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring mixture to a low boil, reduce heat to a low simmer and continue to cook for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally. Oatmeal is ready when the oats have soaked up most of the liquid and are creamy. Remove from heat and stir in maple syrup and brown sugar. Portion oats in a bowl and enjoy warm with desired toppings!
Customize Your Oatmeal
The mix-in and topping possibilities are endless when it comes to oatmeal! Here are some ideas:
With fruit: Add your favorite fresh fruit to your bowl of oats like sliced banana, chopped apples, peaches or strawberries. Add nuts: Bring some crunch to your oats with your favorite nuts. Chopped almonds would be delicious or if you want to go the sweeter route you could try these candid walnuts or candid pecans! Protein: Add a scoop of your favorite nut butter like almond butter, coconut butter or peanut butter for some added protein. Or add a scoop of your favorite vanilla protein powder. Spices: Want to amp up the flavor of this oatmeal? Add some additional spices like cardamom, allspice or nutmeg. Chocolate: Add some chocolate chips, cacao nibs or even some crushed-up chocolate for a healthy dose of magnesium and potassium. Granola: You really can’t go wrong with adding granola to your oats!
