Kids will love the bright green shade of this slurm drink and the sweet and tart ginger limeade. OR you can spike it with some vodka for the adults. If you’re planning a Futurama marathon, then you’ve got to have some SLURM! Futurama Slurm Drink So I assume you guys know by now that I’m a food geek. After all, you’re on a food blog, where I talk about things that excite me to no end – like the nitty gritty of making perfect choux pastry, French croissants, brioche bread, the best pavlova recipe, hot dog buns, or glazed doughnuts. The other thing that you guys may or may not know about me by now is that I also am… a geek. A straight-up, no-qualifiers-required, geek. So what do I love to watch as a geek and a fan of all kinds of TV shows? All kinds of TV shows. And in particular, animated shows! I love most things from classic cartoons to ones that are more adult-oriented (like Archer, Family guy, and certain Anime shows like Fullmetal Alchemist, TriGun), and of course any kind of animated movie. Especially anything from Pixar, or Hayao Miyazaki (or Studio Ghibli). Fun fact – my blog name was also inspired by my favorite animated show – The Last Airbender (a story where the protagonist Aang and his friends live in a world where people can “bend” and manipulate elements like water, earth, fire and air, and the Avatar being able to bend all four). Another fun fact – every time, I see another food blogger refer to my blog as The Flavor Blender, I chuckle. Which is pretty much every other time that someone mentions my blog name. Today, I’m paying homage to another one of my favorite animated cartoonists – Matt Groening. He’s the creative force behind the wildly popular The Simpsons. I’ve already done a couple of Simpsons-themed recipe posts – Homer Simpson cake pops and Homer Simpson donuts (doh’nuts). Today, I’m recreating the “highly addictive” and popular drink SLURM from another one of his cartoons – Futurama!
So what is the Futurama SLURM drink?
It’s a soft drink that’s popular in the Futurama universe, and it’s Fry’s favorite drink that’s distributed by the “Bureau of Soft Drinks, Tobacco, and Firearms”. I absolutely loved the episode where we find out more about the slurm drink. That episode combined one of my favorite books from childhood (Charlie and the chocolate factory) with the Futurama universe, in which we discover the many secrets behind Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, Fry (along with Bender and Leela) and how the SLURM drink is actually produced (you don’t wanna know). Spoiler Alert! I even created slurm labels to go on the bottles, with a few easter eggs hidden on the label! Can you guess what they are? 🙂 GET YOUR HIGH RES PRINTABLE SLURM LABEL HERE! The base of this slurm is my homemade ginger limeade! If you haven’t checked it out yet, you definitely should. It’s a sweet, tart, refreshing drink with the striking flavor and spicy warmth of ginger. It’s one of my favorite drink recipes in summer. I colored it with yellow and green food coloring to get the same bright green shade of the slurm drink in this sparking limeade, and I added some vodka for good measure too. If you’re ever planning on a Futurama marathon, the vodka will help numb your emotions for the Jurassic Bark episode. Trust me – you’ll need it.
