4.8 26 Published Oct 01, 2012, Updated Oct 06, 2021 Now that it’s fall, I can’t stop making pumpkin treats so naturally, I decided to make a pumpkin spice trail mix! It’s the perfect mix of salty and sweet. It would be fun to set out a bowl of this at Thanksgiving or handing out little treat bags of this for Halloween.

Pumpkin Spice Trail Mix Ingredients

nuts – I used a mix of raw whole almonds, raw pecans, raw walnut halves but you can use whatever you have on hand. Cashews would be delicious!rolled oats – make sure you grab gluten-free oats if necessary! I like Bob’s Red Mill brand.raw pepitas – also known as pumpkin seeds! Adding to your trail mix boosts the plant-based protein and is on theme with our pumpkin flavored trail mix!coconut sugar – a natural sweetener. You can also use brown sugar.seasonings and spices – ground cinnamon, paprika, pumpkin pie spice and sea salt.pumpkin puree – canned pumpkin puree works great but you can also make your own pumpkin puree!all natural apple juice or apple cider – try to get all natural, as it will have less added sugars! I like to pick up apple cider from the farmers market! Also note that I do mean regular apple cider and not apple cider vinegar!dried cranberries and raisins – dried fruit adds such a nice texture to trail mix!

How to Make Homemade Trail Mix

Mix dry ingredients – In a large bowl, mix the almonds, oats, pecans, pepitas and walnuts. Mix wet ingredients – Mix together the pumpkin puree and apple juice or cider. Pour the mixture over the nuts and toss until the nuts are evenly coated. Sprinkle the mixture with coconut sugar, cinnamon, paprika, pumpkin pie spice and salt. Toss to coat. Bake – Spread the trail mix evenly on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake at 250ºF for 30-35 minutes, stirring halfway through. Cool – Let the mixture cool completely and then stir in the cranberries and raisins.

How to Store Homemade Trail Mix

Store your homemade trail mix in an airtight container. It will keep at room temperature for up to 1 week, up to a month in the fridge and up to 3 months in the freezer. Ours never makes it past a week… it’s too tasty!

Variations & Substitutions

One of my favorite things about trail mix is how customizable it is! I recommend keeping the seasoning the same since this is a pumpkin spice trail mix but feel free to change up any of the items listed below.

Nuts – I love the combination of nuts I used but you can absolutely switch up which nuts you use. Keep the ratios the same so you’re adding the same amount of volume! I bet cashews would be delicious!Seeds – Same as the nuts, you can definitely swap out the pumpkin seeds for a different nut or seed of your choice. Try sunflower seeds for a similar size.Dried fruit – Same here! Use any dried fruit you’d like, just make sure you keep the ratios the same. Goji berries would make a great substitute.

A Festive Treat!

Like I mentioned above, this is the perfect trail mix to have sitting out for any fall gathering. I also plan to bag these up to pass out to some of our friend’s kiddos for Halloween this year. Love the idea of a homemade treat instead of a sugar-laden snack!
