Indian food has a special place for quick and easy chaat recipes. And, this sweet corn recipe is both easy to cook and fancy enough to serve as a party appetizer. Corn bhel can also be served with sev puri or alongside corn fritters.
What is Corn Bhel?
Corn bhel is a sweet corn snack made with fresh corn, onions, potatoes, tomatoes, and other spices. It has a spicy tangy and sweet flavor that tastes great when served with sev. I have served this sweet corn recipe with tamarind and green chutney. You can even sprinkle some chaat masala and sev puri. Unlike other chaat recipes, Corn Bhel is actually a variation of the traditional Bhel Puri. Bhel Puri traditionally is made with puffed rice mixed with onions, potatoes, tomatoes, and few spices. To make corn bhel you need boiled corn, boiled potatoes, chopped onions, and tomatoes. For spices, you need red chili powder, roasted cumin powder, pudina powder, black salt, and chaat masala. Usually, for making corn bhel, we add sugar. This gives the chaat a pleasant flavor that compliments the spiciness of the chili. I like to serve corn bhel the traditional way. So, often times I top it with sev, tamarind chutney, and green chutney. Whenever I serve corn snacks to the guest I add a packet of nachos as well. This makes this simple chaat a fancy appetizer. To make tasty sweet corn recipes, it is important to select from the right sweet corn variety. The standard sweet corn varieties contain a special sugary gene that is responsible for the sweetness and creaminess of the corn.
